discovering inconsistencies between an ERF workshop manual and later ERF instructions concerning the maintenance of Kirkstall axles, there seems to have been a misunderstanding (CM 13-19 December 1990).
The story referred to a problem with wheel nuts, when in fact the controversy surrounds the wheel bearings. It also quotes me as saying that the "less scientific" service check does not require a dial gauge check. This is incorrect. All our service instructions, whichever method of movement check is adopted, require the use of a dial gauge.
We insist that if the service instructions are followed and correct maintenance is ensured, there is no problem. RP England, Marketing director, ERF, Sandbach, Cheshire.
