The Wearside district witnessed a revolutionary transport development recently when the Sunderland District Tramways Co., now known as the Sunderland District Transport Co., discarded their entire tramway system in favour of motorbuses, and now the Sunderland Corporation has before it a proposal to effect a similar substitution on its Durham Road in-town route.
The proposal has been temporarily held up, for the town council has defeated a proposal to secure comparative costs for renewing the tramway track and for purchasing a fleet of buses, but, in view of the condition of the track, it
is likely that the whole question will be brought up again for consideration in the near future. So far as the travelling public is concerned, Wearsiders, generally, are very strongly in favour of buses, and the suggestion of substituting buses for trams over this section has been received with general satisfaction.
