Clothing and Drapery Trades Provide Indications of Being Busy. Numerous Small Orders for Wool and Rayon Goods. Boot and Shoe Industry Shows Signs of Distinct Improvement
MHOLESALERS in the clothing V V land drapery trades are now preparing for the Easter rush. Hauliers should note that, whilst hose manufacturers in the Midlands and north are quiet, imports of cheap rayon goods of that description are "up."
The building trade is certain to be more active this summer than it was lust summer. In London alone the amount to be spent is 116,000,000 more than last year, an increase of 33 per cent.
The output of many iron and steel makers is now larger in volume than it bar been for some time, whilst concerns in the heavy-engineering industry are increasing their activities.
North-east Coast, The Newcastle Rehousing Committee is to proceed with clearance schemes and, subsequently, 569 houses will be built, Durham R.D.C. is to build 37 houses at Pittington. Messrs. G. Fordy, Brynholme, Durham Road, Stockton-on-Tees, are to erect 162 houses on the Sunderland Glebe site, for Stockton T.C.
A. Reyrolle and Co., Ltd., Hebburnon-Tyne, is experiencing a big demand for its Eureka Vacuum cleaners.
Lanchester R.D.C. proposes building 9& houses in various districts and tenders are invited. Mr. H. J. Cook, 16, Grey Street, Ryhope, has prepared plans for the layout of land in Silksworth Lane, Sunderland, for Sunderland Estates, Ltd. Mr. F. W. Hindmarsh, Goforth, Newcastle, is starting work on the building of over 100 houses on the Saltwell Road site at Gateshead. Messrs. MacKenzie Bros., Duke Street, Darlington, have received a contract for the building of a new Methodist Chapel In Park Street, Darlington.
Yorkshire.
There is moderate activity in the spinning sections of wool and rayon factories, chiefly for 'hose manufacturers, and orders are small but numerous.
Manufacturers of semi-finished and iron and steel have more work than they have had for some time past. The demand for scrap iron and steel is in excess of the supply. The trade in scissors and safety razors and blades continues to improve. Steel works in Sheffield and district are becoming busier.
Bridlington T.C. is to build a further 100 houses, and Beverley P.C. is to erect 40 houses on the Cherry Tree Lane site. Messrs. Henderson Bros., South Shields, arc., to build the pit-head baths at North Seaton Colliery, Ashington.
Lancashire and Cheshire.
The tanneries in Liverpool, Warrington and Runcorn are reaping the benefit from the increased activity of boot and shoe manufacturers.
Messrs. G. H. Bail are to build 15S houses at Cursen, Southport. Toclinorden T.C. is considering a scheme of sluus clearance and rehousing, also the erection of 50, houses on the Ashenhurst eitate.7. Whitehaven, too, is to proceed
with slum clearance near the harbour and is to erect 120 houses by direct labour.
Midlands.
The improvement in the boot and shoe trade, noted last week, continues. In
some parts of Northamptonshire conditions are stated to be better than they have been for ten years.
In Nottingham and Leicester the mgst active departments are those concerned with making knitted outerwear.
There is an increase in the demand for galvanized sheets, according to Birmingham reports. All kinds of hardware and holloware are in great demand. The Baths Hotel, Matlock Bath, is to be rebuilt at a cost of 1100,000. Peterborough T.C. proposes to develop the river embankment, Cheltenham T.C. Is to build 49 houses on theAlston° house estate. Boston R.D.C. is to be responsible for the erection of 26 houses in Kirton, 16 in Wyberton, 12 in Leverton, six in Kirton Fen, four in Bicker and four in Frampton. Lichfield T.C. is to build 62 houses at Leafields. Lincoln P.C. is borrowing 114,000 for the erection of 40 houses at Simm's Hill.
Messrs. J. Hicken, Willenhall, Staffs,
are to build 42 houses in Coltham Road for Short Heath R.D.C. Messrs. M. Wilesmith and Son, Howsell Road, Malvern Link, Malvern, is to construct 80 houses for Stourport U.D.C. Housing, Ltd., Blackheath, Birmingham, has secured the contract for 164 houses, to be built for Worcester T.C., in Tolladine Road.
Wales.
The demand for coal remains steady. A new pavilion, estimated to cost nearly £20,000, is to be erected by Aberystwyth T.C.
Scotland.
According to reports from Hawick, the position with regard to hosiery and underwear is improving. The demand for knitted outerwear is fair and makers of high-class tweeds are busy. Ayr T.C. is to erect 72 houses at Lochside.
East Anglia.
The boot and shoe factories in Norwich are sharing in the general improvement in the trade in those products. Makers of high-grade goods are most active. An elementary school is to be built near Grove Park, Bury St. Edmunds.
London and Home Counties.
Sales of leather in the Bermondsey market are better than they have been of late.
A large cinema is to be built at Heathway, Dagenham, Messrs. H. Macintosh are to have 116 houses built on the Brockley Hall estate, Lewisham. Additions, which will involve an expenditure of 1172,500, are recommended in connection with Hammersmith Hospital. Reigate Institution is to be enlarged at a cost of 1120,000. Deal T.C. is to build 138 houses in Cemetery Road.
Extensions to the promenade at Worthing, and the provision of a bathing pool, children's boating pool and a model yacht pond, have been approved by the T.C. Kenn and Sons, Ltd., Bexley, is to erect 136 houses in connection with the Hillyfields housing scheme, Gillingham.
Southend-on-Sea will, on October I, take in Shoeburyness, and it is proposed to carry out an improvement by the extension of the promenade by several
