• A wide range of vehicle safety measures was under consideration by the Department of the Environment, said Mr Eldon Griffiths, an Under-Secretary, when he told MPs of the work the Department has already done.
Mr Edwin Wainwright (Labour, Dearne Valley) asked that heavy lorries should have really efficient braking systems, and Mr Griffiths said he accepted the need to consider how best to manage the improvement of braking systems, and the Department was doing that now.
He also agreed to look into methods of reducing spray thrown up by long lorries— a motorway hazard brought to his attention by Dr Tom Stuttaford (Tory, Norwich South).
