• Northern Ireland-based haulier D Curran & Sons of Bangor is operating one of the first lowheight Volvo FH tractors to be sold in the UK. The two-axle FH420 is hauling a triaxle curtainsider with a 2.9m loading aperture within the 38-tonne 4.2m height limit.
Over the past five years Currans has successfully increased loading aperture heights by around 250mm using low-height tractors and modified trailers.
The latest FH has conventional 295 80 R22.5 tyres on the front axle giving a plated weight of 7.1 tonnes: the rear axle has lower-profile 305 70 R22.5 tyres.
The tractor's front suspension spacer blocks have also been removed. With a Fontaine coupling fitted the FH420 has a fifth-wheel height of 1,092mm.
