• The Association of Vehicle Recovery Operators has rejected the AA's plea for an alliance to help safeguard seven newly acquired police rescue contracts, And AVRO president George Graham says members are questioning whether the AA should even retain the contracts it acquired when it bought Bailey Toon, which AVRO financed to win police contracts (CM 24-30 March). One of the forces affected, Cleveland Police, says it is examining its contract with Bailey Toon.
The AA says recovery operators will be no worse off under its management.
AVRO members are delighted with the ballot: eight of 13 regions had voted against the proposal as CM went to press, giving a majority against the move: "How could AVRO get into bed with the AA? It would alienate other motoring clubs that give us work," says Kent operator Michael Lambert.
