III The Government was expected to outline billions of pounds of road building cuts this week as part of a reorganisation within the Department of Transport's roads administration.
Sources close to the DOT stuck to estimates of an 8%—or billion--cut in the a3bn 10year road building programme, which was first announced five years ago.
The DOT will give road schemes priority, with construction timetables for the first time, but some projects are expected to be dropped.
The announcement is expected at the launch of the Highways Agency, the trunk road maintenance and building function of the DOT which becomes an arms-length executive agency. The HA will have responsibility for its business plan and will join a number of other other executive agencies affiliated to the DOT, including the Vehicle Inspectorate.
