Operators are ready to tackle the delivery challenges during the Olympics, but London councils are lagging behind, according to witnesses at last week’s Transport Committee session.
Speaking at the evidence session looking into transport and the Olympics, the Freight Transport Association head of policy for London, Natalie Chapman, said hauliers were ready.
She added: “Our members are well prepared, but their biggest challenge is the customers themselves – some are still unwilling to accept that [the Olympics] will affect them.” Chapman told the MPs that greater use of nighttime deliveries during and after the Games, the relationship built with TfL and freight’s raised political profile, would be road transport’s Olympic legacy.
However, Catherine West, chair of London Councils’ transport committee, which represents the capital’s local authorities, said: “The local area traffic management and parking plans came to us late in the day. It leaves us little time to consult over what tends to be controversial [for residents].”
