• Cummins' 14-litre N-series engine is to stay in production along with the Apex. Cummins' line at the Mid-America Show was "the market will decide" how long the N-Series stays in production.
The Apex is around 227kg lighter but will have limited availability at its introduction. Also, the 14-litre will keep its current power ratings—up to 525hp (392kW)—filling in between Mll and Apex until those ranges close the gap.
Also shown at Mid-America (see page 14), Mack's unit-pump E-Tech engines signal the way ahead for the next generation of Renault engines.
They have six injector pumps mounted adjacent to the camshaft. Short, equal-length pipes connect to the conventional pencil-type injectors.
Electronic fuel controls in the pumps give the functionality of an electronic unit injector without the need to accommodate the complicated injector up in the head. The secondary benefit, says Mack, is that fuel does not get heated passing close to combustion chambers. Renault does not yet offer the latest V-MAC electronic engine management in Europe, tagged V-MAC III.
