Silentnight's Mr Khan evaluated the mattresses under five headings: aesthetics, workmanship, ticking and fillings, dimensions, and feel (ticking refers to the material covering a mattress). He then awarded points out of ten in each category. Mercedes seems to have put a lot of work into this mattress, compared with its previous model which finished fifth out of seven in last year's test. The only thing that let it down slightly was its size. Scania still offers the best bunk, and not only because of its vast width. While there's not much to separate the others, the MAN came last—mainly on workmanship and fillings. Having said all that, Khan was keen to stress the difference between objective mattress quality and the resulting quality of sleep, which depends on factors as diverse as the sleeper's size and what he's used to.
On the whole he was reasonably impressed with the bunks. It was no surprise to him that they weren't as good as a proper bed, but he did rate them above your average folding bed.
