• Dawsongroup's truck-hire 'profits fell by 19% last year as a result of tough competition and over-supply in the market
It reduced its fleet by 17% over the year because of the difficult trading conditions: truck hire now represents just half of Dawsongrou 's rental turnover as the company strives to diversify into higher growth areas such as trailer hire. Contract hire also faced tough competition but the trailer rental market was more encouraging, says Dawsongroup chairman Peter Dawson.
The group's pre-tax profit fell from £10.6m in 1995 to £9.3m in 1996.
U Vehicle rental group TLS made record profits last year with a 40% rise to £5.8m. Its fleet size increased 49% to just over 9,000 vehicles.
