MI Bridgestone's new wide single drive axle tyre incorporates a novel run-flat system. The biggest problem holding back the widespread use of 'Mega Drives' is tyre deflation. Bridgestone's AIRCEPT solution consists of a secondary chamber within the tyre which, In the event of a loss of pressure, rapidly inflates to support the tyre's load. A pressure monitoring system simultaneously warns the driver, who can bring the vehicle to a safe, controlled stop. If necessary, the vehicle can be driven to a place of safety at speeds of up to 25km/h.
The Greatec Mega Drive tyre comes as a 495/451122.5 and offers a mounted weight reduction of 45kg compared with a pair of 315/701122.5s. It also claims a 12% reduction in rolling resistance and a 175mm reduction in overall width.
