75 years ago: 3 April 1928
Trade associations, the Commercial Motor Users Association and the Chamber of Commerce lobbied the government over its failure to repair bridges across the UK. They claimed that weak bridges and level crossings on important routes were causing a great loss to trade and industry. Colonel Ashley said that he would set aside £250,000 from the Road Fund towards the cost of reconstructing weak rail and canal bridges, as well as replacing level crossings on major roads.
50 years ago: 3 April 1953
The Transport and General Workers Union asked the Road Haulage Wages Council to eliminate the three shilling pay difference between the statutory scales for drivers of A and B licences and the agreed rates for those employed by the Road Haulage Executive. The TGWU also called for a review of drivers' holiday entitlement, claiming that many were only granted time off either in the early or late period of the summer.
25 years ago: 31 March 1978
The Road Haulage Association warned that the haulage industry would suffer bankruptcies and unemployment within months unless transport unions agreed to work with the tachograph. RHA national vice-chairman Ken Rogers said that the EEC Commission was determined that the UK would comply with its tachograph regulations: "If drivers refuse to work with tachos they are bound to lose out sooner or later. Earnings will fall because drivers will not be able to go beyond the 2 SI-mile daily limit."
