• Although Dover and Felixstowe fail to make the UK's top five ports in terms of tonnage handled, they are by far the busiest as far as hauliers are concerned.
Dover is Europe's busiest ro-ro freight port and handles around 1.6 million trucks and trailers a year, according to latest Department for Transport (Dff) statistics.
Felixstowe is by far the biggest container port, handling 1.9 million units annually, which is 43% of the overall UK market. Southampton has 16% of the market, handling around 7o cr,000 units.
The top five ports in terms of tonnage handled are Grimsby and Immingham, Tees and Hartlepool, London, Forth, and Suliom Voe.
The number of vehicles travelling to
Europe has risen by174% over the last 16 years, but the proportion of UK hauliers involved has plunged from 52% in 1996 to 27% 11 12002.
The Dff's Transport Statistics Bulletin shows that 493,0m00 UK-registered powered vehicles travelled to the Continent last year, but that is weighed against the 1,290,100 vehicles that were registered abroad.
