I READ WITH a combination of interest and dismay recent articles on the LGV driving test, Driver CPC and the costs incurred.
I have been an owner-driver since 1968, and have witnessed the increasing amount of money the industry has had to shell out to keep pace with legislation.
First, it was testing and plating followed by spray flaps, side guards, tachographs, speed limiters, the Working Time Directive (WTD), smart cards, AdBlue and now the Driver CPC. Many were necessary and welcome, but there are a couple of turkeys in the list, namely the WTD and the Driver CPC. I've always maintained that we already have a WTD: it's called tachograph legislation. How washing my truck on a Saturday morning is considered work and washing my car is not work is still something I cannot get my head around.
Since 1968, I have driven more than three million miles, many with vacuum brakes and crash gearboxes. I've done 10 years on tankers, 10 years operating truck loaders, I've operated tippers and I've roped and sheeted. I would like to know which jobsworth examiner is going to come along and tell me how to do my job. Similar to a number of other drivers who are my age, I shall keep my money in my pocket, tell them to stuff it and retire from the industry Sorrow has to be felt for young aspiring truck drivers — the costs and hassle are just not worth it.
