• Parcelforce and the Union of Communication Workers have agreed a pay package aimed at making the state-owned parcels carrier more like its private competitors.
Details few, but it is believed that management has pushed for a more flexible wage agreement. The union is preparing to put the deal to its members.
It is not expected to cost jobs, but it is intended to bring the loss-making organisation to break-even point by its target date of April 1996.
Management has been working on an overhaul of Parcelforce since the Government decided it could have more commercial freedom in the state sector.
Union leaders acting for most of Parcelforce's 14,000 staff went into negotiations asking for wage increases of around 2.6%, which they claim will be in line with the rest of the Post Office.
