• Fewer than one in 20 lorries are creating excessive exhaust pollution, according to figures published by the Department of Transport.
Of the 2,543 LGVs checked during an anti-pollution blitz between January and March, 10 were issued with immediate prohibition notices and 87 with delayed prohibition notices. The proportion of lorries receiving prohibitions was 4.1%, up on the 3.5% recorded during a similar blitz last year but for better than all other vehicles apart from PCVs.
Hertfordshire and Essex had the worst record for offending LGVs at 18.4%.
The roadside checks were introduced last year in response to mounting public concern about air pollution.
