• European harmonisation on transporting dangerous goods by road took a step forward last week with the launch of the 1993 edition of the ADR.
The European Agreement Concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road* was drawn up by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe.
Hauliers who operate on the Continent will need to implement the new regulations by 1 January next year, but domestic carriers will not need to fall in line with the new rules until 1995 following the publication of further regulations.
The 1993 edition includes changes to the rules governing equipment to be carried, particularly fire extinguishers; a tightening up of vehicle marking requirements; and changes to driver training.
* Copies of the publication (ISBN 0 11551 1148) can be obtained from HMSO, price £29.50.
