• Twelve transport workers have died in Ireland in offroad accidents so far this year. The deaths, which were the result of workers being run over, crushed, trapped under, or losing control of vehicles, were due to carelessness in operation of systems or lack of maintenance of vehicles, according to the Health & Safety Authority.
The HSA conducted almost 800 workplace inspections during June. During these checks it discovered that 107 places of work, spread across all sectors of industry, had inadequate controls in place for transport and mechanical handling systems.
The inspectors targeted haulage companies and transport divisions in the construction, agriculture, mining and quarrying, and warehousing sectors.
Following these checks they issued 93 verbal warnings to operators to effect improvements: 12 formal improvement notices and Iwo improvement directions were also issued.
