• International operators travelling through Belgium face stringent roadside safety checks early next year.
A spate of severe accidents involving commercial vehicles has led the Belgian government to call on the International Road Transport Union to help warn operators that roadside checks involving several government ministries and the Belgian police will take place in February and March.
"Other controls on a smaller scale will continue to be performed throughout the year by the various departments in charge," says Georges Duhaut, the director-general of the Belgian police.
Reducing the number of road accidents and casualties requires everyone's goodwill and strict compliance with the highway code, he adds.
