• Hoyer UK wants to recruit 60 drivers after winning a national distribution contract with sugar manufacturer Tate Sz. Lyle. Although all of T&L's 90 in. house drivers are being offered jobs with Boyer, union leaders are hitter about the move.
The contract involves distributing around 500,000 tonnes of bulk and liquid sugars a year from Silvertown, east London.
A T&L spokesman says the work will be transferred within the next four months. "Several months' investigation came to the conclusion we should be concentrating on sugar refining," he explains.
Huddersfield-based Hoyer's recruitment drive is designed to bring the workforce up to full strength, Bob Gittins, deputy convenor for the Transport & General Workers Union at T&L's Silvertown refinery, says drivers feel bitter because the company had repeatedly threatened to contract the work out unless they agreed to changes in working practices.
