WAINFLEET haulier Joseph Stapleton was " last week fined a total of £2,550 after he had written to the North Holland Magistrates' Court, Boston (Lincs.), pleading guilty to five charges of using vehicles without Excise licences.
The maximum penalties were stated to be either £20 for each offence or three times the cost of the appropriate Excise licence. In three of the cases the licence fee was £171, in the fourth case it was £207 and in the fifth case £90.
The Chairman of the Bench, announcing the fines, said the Court had decided to impose maximum penalties in view of the defendant's "bad record of similar offences".
Later it was discovered that a mistake had been made in the calculation of the penalties and that Stapleton had been fined £120 too much. This is being adjusted.
