gUNDERLAND Corporation Transport converts its town centre-Grindon bus service to one-man operation this month, and the Northern General Transport Co. Ltd., which operates jointly with the Corporation, will withdraw from the service.
Northern buses will operate an increased mileage on the joint Townend Farm and Hylton Castle estate services to make up for the loss of mileage on the Grindon route.
Sooner or later, however, Northern will have to give serious consideration to introducing oneman buses in Sunderland if the town's ambitious flat-fare one-man switch-over is not to be impeded. At present the company does not operate any one-man buses.
