• A total of four CV manufacturers were found to have broken their Type Approval status in the year to April 1990, according to the Vehicle Certification Agency.
But few of these defects affected vehicle safety, says the VCA, which is responsible for granting Type Approval to all vehicles sold in the UK.
Most faults were with parts which were other than those outlined in the manufacturers' documentation, including air cleaners, silencers and brake components.
The survey covered the last year before the Bristol-based VIA became an independent executive agency — similar to the Vehicle Inspectorate.
