• This week Shell-Mex and BP Ltd shipped three vehicles to Northern Ireland. On Monday they begin direct delivery from the compacy's Belfast warehouse to customers throughout the province. Until now this work has been undertaken on contract by Northern Ireland Carriers.
The bodies, constructed by A. C. Penman Ltd, of Dumfries. are mounted on BLMC Laird LR1200 chassis. They are panelled in stainless steel on extruded alloy sections reinforced with steel. The rear and front near side doors are roller shuttered and folding electro-hydraulic tail-lifts with 2000lb lifting capacity are fitted. The vehicles arc 'fitted with Heil-A-Way tailboard lifts. It is understood that this is the first application of this equipment in the United Kingdom.
