• In the same week that the Ministry of Transport revealed a one-in-three failure rate in heavy goods vehicle driving licence tests (CM, June 26) one of the largest haulage companies in the North of England, R. Hanson and Son Ltd, Wakefield, introduced a new RTITB-approved hgv driver training centre. The prospectus includes details of five standard courses offered at the Hanson Centre. Three of them are conversions, viz car driver to rigid hgv (10 days); Group 3 to Group 2 hgv (five days); and rigid to artic (Group 1.) (five days). There arc also an advanced driving course (theory and practice) for experienced men, five days, and a one-day pre-MoT test refresher.
Facilities available include specially prepared Atkinson eight-wheel tippers.
Fees are as follows: for companies in RTITB scope, £10 per day per driver, minimum five days (£15 per day for odd days); companies out of RTITB scope, £12 per day, minimum five days. Special rates are available if a company supplies a vehicle with its trainees and substantially lower rates may be negotiated where large companies are prepared to enter into a regular commitment for training services. For these latter a training advisory service is available at no extra cost.
Applications for places and for further information should be made to the Group Training Officer, Mr I. P. Ramsay, R. Hanson and Son Ltd, Four Mile Works, Newmillerdam, Wakefield (telephone Wakefield 55011).
