• A new scheme to catch drivers whose vehicles exceed the legal noise limit has been suggested by the Noise Abatement Society to the Minister of Transport. The object is to simplify the present system which involves expensive equipment and cumbersome regulations.
The Society is proposing the use of a simple pocket noise meter which would be carried by policemen for traffic purposes. It would be used as a. first check, like the breathtester in cases of suspected drinking.
When an alleged "noise" offender was detected, the owner of the vehicle would be required to report to one of the Ministry's testing stations within a given period.
Here the vehicle would undergo the noise tests required by the present law. If the noise was excessive, the owner would he required to report back within a week with the fault corrected, or face a fine.
The Society claims that the scheme could be started without legislation by Ministerial Order, and that it has police approval.
