• A special bus lane, on part of the Albert Embankment, Lambeth, has been approved for consultation purposes by the south area board of GLC's environmental planning committee. The lane, London's fifth, will apply between the hours of 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. in a northbound direction on the river side.
During the morning peak, queues of traffic extend back for 400yd or more, from the Lambeth Bridge roundabout, resulting in delays of up to six minutes. About 60 buses an hour, carrying 2700 passengers, use Albert Embankment northbound in the morning peak.
Re-aligning of the central refuges will provide two lanes for normal traffic and a lane from which other traffic will be banned during the peak.
