• A demonstration of the Telma electric retarder took place in South Buckinghamshire last week when 54 passengers were taken on an 18.6-mile route—which included five gradients in the Chiltern Hills with severities exceeding 1 in 10—in a ford R 226 coach equipped with the device.
A hooter was connected to the brake pedal of the vehicle to signal when this was being used and the effectiveness of the retarder shown by the fact that, except when an emergency stop was made under police escort on M40 Wycombe Motorway, the hooter never sounded throughout the run.
It was learned at the demonstration that there will shortly be an announcement by Telma that an electric retarder suitable for fitting on light vans and private cars will become available.
