NEW TRUCKS, BUSES and coaches may be fitted with dedicated daytime running lights from summer 2012 as part of a move by Brussels to prevent up to 2,000 road deaths a year across Europe.
The move will follow the fitting of such lights to cars and vans in 2011. The lights consist of two small lamps in the front, differing from normal headlamps in the intensity and direction of their light. They make it easier for other drivers to detect oncoming vehicles. Studies estimate the lamps could save 3% to 5% of European road fatalities, or 1200, to 2,000 lives. 'Lives will be saved,' says Liberal Democrat MEP and environment spokesman Chris Davies.
The European Commission Standing Committee has approved the proposal, which will now go before the European Parliament for scrutiny.
