THE TRUSTEES of the Professional Drivers Association read with interest your interview with Bob Monks of URTU (CM 1 May). He says a lack of facilities on the road is a problem for drivers.
This isn't news to us at the PDA after our efforts campaigning last year to prevent the closure and redevelopment of the Nightowl sites at Wolverhampton and Alconbury. Both of these have hosted URTU's recruitment trailer in the past, yet when news of their threatened closure broke and the PDA's efforts to save them began, where was the union's support?
We made representations at many levels while we tried to save these twotruckstops, yet we didn't hear a thing from URTU or from many other industry bodies while we fought.
Mr Monks is certainly eloquent in his description of some of the pressing issues that are facing our industry, but could his lack of suggested solutions be the reason why drivers aren't rushing to join him and his union?
