Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Car transporters are planning to take on more drivers to cope with the predicted seasonal increase in business. And international work is also increasing as UK car factories step up production and fleet operators replace stocks.

Auto Carriers in Stockton on Tees is among operators who expect to take on drivers, initially on a temporary basis: "We are seeing a continual increase in volumes which started in December," says managing director Richard Durham.

Richard Lawson Motor Company in Hartlepool has taken on six new drivers in the past three weeks and says it may need more temporary staff.

Autocar operations director Chris Hinde says temporary drivers are needed but the company has no plans to increase permanent staff. Tipper operators who haul bulk grain also say they will be looking for extra drivers from next month until August as farmers bring in the harvest.

Ipswich-based Eastern Bulk Services says it would like to hear from experienced tipper operators with their own vehicles who have experience in the agricultural tipping sector.

The company is about to launch an incentive pay scheme for its 14 subcontracted drivers and is about to sign a "reasonable contract in another bulk tipping market".

East Dereham-based CPR Vehicle Deliveries also expects more work during the harvest period; it could be looking for two or three additional drivers to add to the 12 it employs now. Pay will be subject to negotiation, says director Richard Kidd.
