We drove the Trafic dCi 140 with 400kg on board, and two Master vans — the dCi 100 and dCi 120— carrying 800kg.
We enjoyed the Trafic and more powerful Master very much, finding gearchanging quick and responsive on both models, with a smooth gearchange in auto or manual. It Trig felt pretty intuitive as the changes happened pretty much when we would have chosen to make them.
The Master dCi 100 didn't seem so happy, though we might just have been rather unlucky with the example we chose. However, gear changing seemed less sophisticated and smooth, and was much more ponderous.
Overall Renault has come up with a good halfway house between a manual and a full-on auto, with less of the cost and much less of the weight ot an auto. For drivers working round town and in heavy traffic this must be a welcome development.
