DEFORE any action is taken on the Beeching report, Lord Provost Mrs. Jean Roberts wants a study made of the effects it would have on Glasgow.
She said last week-end: "There are 35 stations to be closed in Glasgow and district. The passengers will rush to the buses—but we do not have them.
"Traffic control will become impossible with the congestion and the roads are just not wide enough to cope with a sudden increase.
"Peak-period traffic does not pay, Dr. Beeching admits. But does that mean Glasgow Corporation or the S.M.T. has to provide buses for those services at a loss?"
The committee on public transport facilities heard reports from the chief constable, planning officer and city engineer, then agreed to recommend that the Corporation should urge the Government to make a detailed examination of the consequences of the Beeching report.
