• by Colin Barnett Mercedes-Benz is to launch a 6x4 version of its Econic municipal chassis at the Institute of Waste Management Show at Torbay in June. The new version was developed in response to UK demand for more traction on landfill sites. All Econics will now be powered by the same 280hp Euro-3 six-cylinder engine, mated to an Allison fully automatic transmission.
Sales of the existing models continue at increasing, if still modest, levels. Latest to join the Econic owners' club is Dundee City Council, which recently put into service this 6x2 version, complete with a Norba computer body and Otto bin lifting gear.
■ Mercedes has revealed that while the passenger version of its A Classbased Vaneo will be launched in February 2002, it has yet to decide whether to produce a panel van derivative. If a panel van variant does get the go-ahead, it certainly won't appear before 2003.
