The Low Pay Commission (LPC) is an independent advisory body which was established as a result of the National Minimum Wage Act (1998) to advise the government about the National Minimum Wage.
The Department of Trade and Industry is responsible for guidance, the regulations and the arrangements for compliance and enforcement.
The National Minimum Wage currently stands at £3.70 per hour for those aged 22 and over and £3.20 per hour for those aged from 18-22 years (the age is under review).
The government has accepted the LPC's recommendation to increase the minimum adutt rate from £3.70 to £4.10 from October 2001 and to £4.20 from October 2002.
