ongoing training compulsory—are expected to receive their first reading at the next transport Council of Ministers' meeting on 27-29 June. The council's working party on land transport has now discussed the directive three times and European Commission officials are happy that the directive's principles have received a broad welcome.
As a result, it seems likely that a deal on compulsory training will be struck.
"The Commission has been positive about the welcome the proposal has had," says a Brussels official. "Member states have been generally favourable about initial and continued training."
If the directive is passed in its current form, hauliers will be forced to make sure that experienced truck drivers have 35 hours of retraining every five years.
