AN organization for general carriers in Leeds and district, who are chiefly engaged in the transport by road of market produce and other foods, was formed at an operators' meeting in Leeds, last week. Entitled Leeds and District General Carriers, it is linked up with Leeds Municipal Vehicle Operators, which caters for hauliers doing municipal work in the city, and the Federation of Yorkshire Road Transport Employers.
At last week's meeting, Mr. Harry Clark, manager and Secretary of the Federation, was elected chairman and secretary of the new organization, with Mr. H. Rushworth, of Rushworth's Transports, Ltd., as assistant secretary.
Mr. F. Thompson, of the Yorkshire Federation, who presided, said the -Leeds Municipal Vehicle Operators" organization had proved of considerable value in securing reasonable conditions and fair rates for operators doing municipal haulage in Leeds. He felt that it would be an advantage to the general carriers to be linked up with a body which had already Well established itself.
.The meeting decided to apply for the new organization's inclusion as a section of the Leeds Municipal Vehicle Operators,. which is affiliated to the Yorkshire Federation, and this application has since been approved by the L.M.V.O. committee.
One of the first tasks undertaken by Leeds General Carriers is the submission of members' applications for inclusion of their businesses in the list of protected • establishments under the Government's man-power provisions.
