T0 admit extra air only at moderate manifold depression is the object of a simple device for economizing in petrol which has been evolved by a reader of this paper. As can be seen from the accompanying drawing, there is a spring-loaded ball operating between two seats. In the top and bottom positions (A and C) noair can enter.
At starting and slow running, when suction is high, the
ball is in position A, whilst at full throttle and low speed it is in position C. Thus under starting and fall-power conditions the mixture delivered by the carburetter is unaffected.
In intermediate circumstances, however, the ball is held off both seatings in poSition B. and the mixture is thus weakened just when the engine is running at loads a,nd speeds that enable an advantage to be derived.
The device comprises the four simple parts of the verve itself and a drilled plate for inserting between the oarbu. retter and induction-pipe flanges. It is easy to manufacture and fully. automatic, whilst it requires practically no maintenance and is not subject to wear. A saving of 20 per cent, is claimed. We suggest that the figure is likely to depend largely upon the inherent economy _characteristics of individual engines.
