EDINBURGH city bus fares look set to rise for the first time in five years, following Lothian Region's climbdown from the confrontation with the Government.
As part of a programme of achieving £30m in overall cuts for the remaining six months of the financial year, the council's transportation committee agreed on Monday this week to raise all fares by 5p, with pro rata increases in annual and other season tickets and in scholar's season tickets.
The Labour-controlled committee rejected director of public transport Charles Evans' proposal that the highest cross-Edinburgh fare of 25p be increased to 40p, and proposed a 30p top fare instead. The 5p minimum fare also rises to 10p.
Subject to finance committee approval, the fares will increasee on October 11, and should raise £1.25m in the current financia year.
