ANY London lorry route scheme should be advisory, provide for access to premises located off the network and be accompanied by appropriate road improvements. The Freight Transport Association had told the GLC that provided these criteria are met it has no objections in principle to a lorry routing scheme in Greater London.
The selection of the route network would have to be undertaken with a great deal of care to ensure that the
driver was presented at all times with a sensible and practicable choice of routes. Only in this way could any scheme hope to secure the respect of drivers which would be essential to its success.
As the routes would often be used by drivers who were strange to London it was vital that they were well signed and publicized. The mere issue of maps without supplementary signing would not by itself meet this need.
