Stobart, which carries out all the on-site movement, UK warehousing and distribution of cans produced for the drinks industry from Carnaud Metalbox Bevcan's factory in Botcherby, Cumbria, is fighting off a bid from Exel Logistics.
Negotiations over the three-year contract are at a crucial stage and are said to be reaching a conclusion: whoever wins will handle more than a billion cans and four billion can lids a year.
It is thought highly unlikely that the contract will shared between Stobart and NYC-owned Exel.
Stobart has a long history of work with Carnaud Metalbox, whose Botcherby factory is within two miles of the northern hauliers' head office. Exel's industrial division counts work won from other sections of the can manufacturers' business as one of its largest accounts.
