Women drivers can feel less isolated by joining the Lady Truckers Club which has over 300 members throughout the UK. The club was formed in 1986 by a small group of women linked together by CB radio as they travelled up and down the country. Founder Ilona Richards says"The club has been instrumental in promoting women in transport, having replied to hundreds of letters and telephone calls from women asking for advice on all aspects of lorry driving." Two companies have provided specific training for women: Shell set aside 10 places for training women drivers and TNT introduced a management development programme aimed at increasing its number of women managers, who currently include a depot manager and a general manager.
