• The Transport and General Workers Union in Scotland has pledged to bring private prosecutions against transport bosses in cases where drivers take the blame for offences which are clearly not their fault.
TGWU Scottish transport regional officer Danny Sharpe says hauliers could be brought to book if there is evidence of a lack of investment, poor maintenance or pressure on drivers to complete jobs quickly.
"We want to offer drivers some protection," says Sharpe, "and we will certainly be looking to see where the responsibility lies: this could be with the transport manager or managing director."
