its haulage operation after 41 years in business, blaming the recession and the high cost of fuel for the move.
Managing director of the Welwynbased firm. Richard Smith. says: "We have had to make this decision due to high fuel taxes and spiralling overall running costs and a general downturn. Unfortunately. it has meant between 16 and 20 driver redundancies.'
His calculations suggest that the rising cost of fuel between June 2007 and May 2009 led to the firm having to pay an additional £174,500 on its diesel bill, which it was unable to pass on.
Smith says he is in discussions with another haulier. which is looking to take on some of Rayton's work and possibly purchase the freehold of Royton's site.
Related firms Royton Warehousing and Rayton MoT Test Centre are unaffected by the closure.
