I would like to congratulate you on your sterling efforts throughout the year, particularly your Driver Drive campaign. It's about time someone in the industry stood up and did something about the driver shortage and the unwillingness of companies to invest in their own future. Everyone knows that drivers are the backbone of the industry, and possibly even the country, yet we are paid chickenfeed and have our reputations consistently slagged off by the bosses and the media.
What big firms need to realise is that without us they are completely useless. It's all very well having the smartest, newest trucks if you haven't got anyone to drive them—as the T&G drivers have shown P&O.
So at the end of the day, when it all comes crashing down around their ears, don't say we didn't warn them.
To avoid this doomsday scenario we should be paid a decent wage, get decent hours and have the big hauliers chuck a few of their pennies back into driver training.
So well done on running the campaign...let's hope the industry sits up and takes notice. Join Tkoloy, Sheffield.
