THE SOCIETY of Motor Manufacturers and Traders has added its voice to those in the industry protesting against the Government's plans to sell goods vehicle test stations to the private sector.
It has told the House of Commons transport committee that the sale of the stations would be harmful to commercial vehicle operators and to the market in general, and it has cast doubt on whether the Government will be able to reap the savings it thinks are possible.
As well as pointing to the dangers of impartiality and existing standards being impaired, the SMMT has also indicated that the sale of the stations could limit the feedback of information to the Department of Transport and cause a loss of control of monitoring the joint recall campaigns run with DTp.
