• A truck driver working for Sutton Transport of Hereford escaped from Yugoslavia last week after his truck was set on fire near the Austrian border. Paul Turley, from Llanmartin, Gwent, was ordered from his vehicle by troops, who then set it alight as a barricade. Turley flew back from Austria unhurt on Sunday.
The Foreign Office is warning truck drivers to steer clear of the region.
Hungary has relaxed its per mit restrictions to allow drivers carrying valid Yugoslavian documents to detour through its territory. The alternative is to take the ferry from Italy to Greece.
Two Turkish truckers are reported to have been killed at the border with Austria.
UK hauliers who travel to Yugoslavia and south-east Europe say the fighting is causing them huge problems: "We're struggling," says Taunton operator Paul Selway. "Loads out of Yugo have dried up."
