LAA NEW, longer-wearing 2nd gear set, recognizable by its copperized finish, may be available within a few weeks for Bedford TK gearboxes, subjected. to punishing work, it was revealed on Tuesday, when Vauxhall Motors and Central SMT Sales and Service representatives attended a meeting of the Edinburgh and District Tipper Operators' Association, They had been invited to discuss alleged vehicle shortcomings revealed in local service, and Vauxhall's fleet service engineer, Scottish district sales engineer and a parts department executive, together with Mr. Phillips from SMT, Edinburgh, were able to give detailed answers to points raised by operators. Representatives of 23 tipper operating firms were present, out of the 42 which belong to this flourishing association.
Problems with particular vehicle features, and with obtaining certain spares on occasion, were fully discussed. and most operators appeared very
satisfied with the answers given. The talk was not all "one way ", however. as the 300 engine with full-flow head cooling was spoken of approvingly for its lack of gasket troubles, and the Vauxhall engineers were able to seek operators' views on vehicle requirements. They asked, for instance, whether a big engine, multi-speed. gearbox and singlespeed axle were preferred to a lighter power unit, simple gearbox and twospeed axle. Opinions differed, but several members asked for a strong, simple " austerity" tipper without frills but with really long-lived parts. Some inquired about a tilt cab for the TK so that the changes of major components demanded in tipper work could be done
as swiftly as possible. H.B.C.
