A subtle explanation emerged — it transpires that while Irish hauliers are happy to let it be known that they are working for so-and-so, it is difficult to talk in terms of contracts because of the informal way in which business is conducted. "I have been working for one of Ireland's largest dairies since 1965 — yet nothing has ever been put in writing," one reeferman confided.
